The Muse & Creating: Not just for Writers

On February 1, 2010, I shared my pictures of my house, stating it had great bones, but it was time for a face lift. It was sad watching the demolition team come in and gut the place where my children had spent their formative years. But it was time, and when the process started, I observed how much it was like the blank page of a manuscript. My contractor is also a designer and I gave him pictures of what I liked, and he and his creative process took it from there.

I think from the very start, he saw the end result in his head. He took it from the germ of an idea, to the rough draft, a few rough edges and even a sagging middle. When something didn't work, just like I do when I have to scrap a scene or a chapter, he went back to the drawing board. And today when he completed his project, he wore a tired but accomplished smile on his face. I think he and his muse did an amazing job. Without further ado, here are the before and after pictures.

Very pretty, Donnell! And they were done with all that in 2 1/2 months? Now you can cook in your new kitchen. YAY!

great renovations. I am envious. I so want to do this to my house.

And we're all coming to your house for dinner when?

Love the analogy, and the final results ranks as a Best Seller in any real estate market. Enjoy your lovely new home.

I can't wait to cook, Margaraet, and it came in right at eleven weeks. I still have to do the shelf paper first. Ran out last night! Thank you!

We're planning something, right, Cyndi? A writers' retreat or something? Trust me this was a long time coming. Kids through college, etc. I was so happy to add some color to the house!

Sylvia, no one has a better way with words, or art, than you. I was telling Kathleen that the remodel laughs at the rest of the house now. :( Trust, me that will have to wait a long time.

Margaret, needed coffee ;) apologies for misspelling your name!

Beautiful!!!! So do you just want to sit in your kitchen or family room, look out the window and WRITE??? New appliances--sigh. No kids to ding up or break things--sigh. The backsplash tile work is lovely! Sigh. Just wonderful!

T, I would if I didn't have to buy furniture to sit on first, and if I didn't have so much shelf paper, and boxes to unpack. Remodeling is like a leak. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger ;) I can't wait for my kids to see it in person.

Wow, Donnell! He did an awesome job. I wish I could afford to remodel. I repainted my cabinets summer before last, and that helped brighten the place tremendously, but the way your place looks... I'm envious!!

And yes, when are we invited to dinner?

I think/hope we said September so I can get a lot more done ;) Thanks, Melanie. Trust me when I say I'm cheap and was scared in this economy. But it was my husband who insisted.

What a face lift. I love the big window in the living room. Are you planning to drape it or is it one that you can leave that way? One that doesn't face nosy neighbors?

Great job, Donnell. I love the kitchen.

LOL, Liz. I ordered up/down blinds for those windows. I have great watchful neighbors, as well as bears and dear and foxes oh my! Thanks very much.

That's deer, dear, Okay, I'm off to work!

Absolutely gorgeous, Donnell. From the wood flooring to the countertops to the large windows is like thumbing through a magazine. It could be showcased on HGTV. And, the best part is I saw several perfect writing nooks, so get busy, sweet lady.

Donnell said...

Ah, thanks, June, I can't wait to start writing. too. But one I don't have any chairs, and two, I have too much unpacking/painting to do. But I may carry a recorder, just you wait and see! Thank you for such a nice compliment!

Scribes retreat at Donnell's!

Karin, the remodel laughs at the rest of the house... but thank goodness it's quiet again.
